DELSU Tech Ecosystem Meets to Learn. Innovate and Earn
Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) an academic citadel and her community experienced a wave as the techies, tech enthusiasts and academicians met on Wednesday, 4th December, 2024. It was the second edition of DELSU Tech Invasion (DTI) being organized by Hamplus Technologies International [Hamplus Hub].
The first edition which held February last year was nothing compared to the second edition as the number of attendees was more, the speakers spoke on transforming and impacting topics, and the freebies were intimidating. In this edition, the programme being scheduled for two days had the first day inside the University precisely in Sandwich Hall, Delta State University, Site 3. On that day, the programme started exactly 12 noon with all the attendees already seated. The atmosphere was electrified when the Director of ICT, Prof. Godfrey E. Akpojotor walked into the hall. Earlier, the dean of Student Affairs, Prof Ignatius Nkonyeasua Njoseh had come to check on the programme and encourage the attendees which were mostly students.
Two keynote addresses were delivered, the first being from Jeremiah Omonefe, founder of Falconlite inc. and he spoke on “My Experience as a Startup Founder”. Prof. Godfrey E. Akpojotor who spoke on ‘Python for Academics ‘ delivered the second keynote address. Immediately after Prof’s address, two attendees started the show of receiving freebies – Miss Precious Elozino O. was given a laptop (Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook) to aid her data analytics skills while Faith Oghenevwede O. was given a 100% scholarship to be trained in her choice programme, full stack web development. The scholarship was based on the recommendation of Prof Akpojotor who noticed the attendees zeal and passion for tech despite not being a student of computer science.
The tutorial/seminar section began with Michael Oghenerukevwe Edward speaking on “Developing lite web apps using Flask and Python”, which was followed by Naomi Apomejevwe Egbe who spoke on “Why Learn, Innovate and Earn”. All the speakers scheduled for day 1 of the DTI 2.0 (as can be seen here) all had their seminar/tutorial with exception of Precious Ogbuka who was rescheduled to day 2 and Efiri Tamaradeinyefa who was unavoidably absent.
Three new Python learning groups being PyClub, PyData and PyLadies was formed in Delta State University, Abraka to aid and promote the usage of Python programming language. Day 2 of this event was scheduled to specially attend to prospective members of the new python learning groups through hands-on sessions.
Still on day 1, the attendees which were about 300 persons against the budget of 200 persons were all fed both breakfast and lunch; thanks to J-Splash Pastries. Attendees also received free DTI 2.0 branded tote bags and T-Shirts which were given to them based on their participation and compliance to instruction. Day 1 ended with two other attendees receiving laptops (Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook) to aid their skills in the usage of the Python programming language.
On the second day of DELSU Tech Invasion 2.0 (DTI 2.0), the event began with a welcome address by Hampo John Paul A.C. and a review of yesterday’s activities with the attendees for day 2 given the platform to share their learning, ideas and contributions. This was done to foster the spirit of collaboration and networking. The first and only speaker for the day was absent due to her ongoing orientation exercise at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The scheduled keynote address had been delivered the previous day, however, the rescheduled speaker for day 1, Precious Ogbuka spoke virtually on “Transitioning in Tech Ecosystem as a Female”. It is time for hands-on activities!!!
Joshua Oghenekevwe and Peter Udo Chukuka were saddled with the task to take the participants on Python programming. They started from the practicality of developing a simple web application using Django. The developed application was called Attendance Management App and the GitHub repository can be found here. More than twenty four (24) persons were in attendance as the initial members of the three new python learning groups. PyClub has 17 initial members, PyLadies has 6 initial members and PyData has 17 initial members.
DTI 2.0 was sponsored by Python Software Foundation but the laptop give away was sponsored by Revivn. Various entities partnered with Hamplus Hub in organizing this two days programme namely: LaunchHer, ByteBridge, Falconlite, CharlesTechy (CT), CreativelybyEkd, School Cafe, UniPaddy, Abraka WordPress Community, Innovation Supports Network (ISN), Black Python Devs, AfriLabs and others than can be seen in the banner below.
Hamplus Technologies International [Hamplus Hub] expressed her profound gratitude to all members of the planning committee, members of Hamplus Hub Team and Community, partners and sponsors, management and staff present of Delta State University, Abraka, all speakers, volunteers, attendees and participants for a successful DELSU Tech Invasion 2.0.
